Percival Blakely roomed with Alexander von Zolos during their years in college at Yale University, where they both became fast friends. While Alexander was interested in veterinary sciences and biology, Percival was more interested in perception and the senses, earning doctorates in neurosciences, cognitive sciences, psychology, and philosophy of perception, but both respected each others decision. After the two graduated with honors, they were both invited to teach at Yale as professors in their respective fields. As the years went by, the two remained close friends, finishing grading papers together, and just chatting about science. But, when Alexander’s three favorite former pupils and close friends, Dr. Alan Douglas, Allison Rose, and Prof. Phineas P. Pines mysteriously vanished, Alexander fell into a depression and left America for a time, leaving Percival alone and bitter.
