History

Mephistopheles Faustus was born to a family in Germany in the 1500's and grew up to become a scholar. But he always sought greater things than he had, eventually being confronted by the Prince of Darkness himself Satan. Once the angel named Lucifer, the current Devil, and ruler of Hell. He offered him the chance in order to gain immeasurable wealth and all other worldly pleasures, in exchange for claming his soul in twenty four years time. Mephistopheles accepted and became very wealthy and a succesful businessman. Regularly swindling his customers, and being unfair in his dealings. He also became a notorious womanizer, and would treat them as nothing more than objects. Many years after the deal was struck a farmer he swindled got drunk and attacked him at his home in the middle of the night, and dragged him to die out in the middle of the woods. Having to keep him alive as part of the bargain he had the farmer come across a pack of wolves and attacked, but also managed to direct a kind young woman named Gretchen towards him. She took him back to his home and nursed him back to health, fully knowing his identity. Mephistopheles was thankful and upon leaving when ready offered her some kind of reward for her services. She refused, only wanting to help a person in need. Faustus was amazed with this act of generosity, and began to fall in love with her. He would visit her often and began to try to impress her with his wealth and knowlege but none of it seemed to phase her. Because of what she did for him and the response he had gotten from the farmer he swindled he tried being a much kinder and fairer person in his life. She did not begin to notice him until he got injured rescuing a young boy from a runaway wagon. It was after that that he and Gretchen began to really start knowing each other and she began to fall in love with him as a person and not his material items. Mephistopheles' feelings for her becoming motivated by who she was beyond being a beautiful woman.

Through his interactions with Gretchen he began to realize he did not need everything that Satan had provided him. He saw a future for him and Gretchen that he did not want taken away. He tried contacting Satan again and tried to have the deal ended, but Satan refused and left him. Faustus became devout in Catholocism, and would do anything he could to ward away Satan by doing things like keeping two Bibles on his desk and wearing a cross around his neck. He wanted to, but never could muster up the courage to tell Gretchen the truth. Never getting the opportunity by the time Satan came to collect and had him whisked away to Hell when he accidentally separated himself from all his holy items. He and Gretchen already having a son and Gretchen pregnant with their future daughter at the time.

Mephistopheles became an emissary, or speaker, for Satan by helping him in his affairs with other mortals. Five years after Faustus' soul was claimed Satan managed to capture an old and powerful rival known as Zarathos who he imprisoned in Hell's dungeons. Eventually he came into contact with Mephistopheles, sensing how he hated his position. Zarathos talked to him and told of a hidden weapon that he had once sought out that could have the power to destroy Satan and free him from his servitude known as the Spear of Destiny. The spear the pierced Chrit's side when he was on the Cross and absorbed a ton of his power in the process. Wanting the chance to do this and return to his family Mephistopheles took his advice, and in exchange promised to free Zarathos from his imprisonment if he managed to find the spear and slay his master. Mephistopheles eventually managed to find the spear and bided his time 'til he was alone wtih Satan. Eventually Satan had his back turned to Faustus and he took the opportunity to attack. He slew Satan and cast him down. Satan as he died laughed at himself and the situation claiming, "My own hand was my undoing. It was the woman I sent to your aid those years ago that caused this fiery passion inside you to rebel. But in time, I think you'll become an even greater Devil than I." As Satan faded away his unearthly dark powers through the Spear of Destiny were absorbed into Mephistopheles as the Heavenly powers within the spear refused to accept it. He wanted to refuse to believe Satan's words, thinking that he was saying that all the kindness and love Gretchen gave him was all an illusion created by him. As Faustus left Hell he freed Zarathos as promised.

He returned back to the mortal realm, and back to his home town to see his family again. When he returned he saw Gretchen in their bed with another man. With his new dark powers came a dark influence over his soul, mind, and judgment. He was convinced now that everything was a lie, his mind seeing it as her just forgetting about him so quickly after his disappearance. Thinking that she never could have truly loved him then. In his rage he unleashes his power in a wave of fire burning both Gretchen and the man with her alive. His two children then ran into the room and screamed when they saw the horrific scene. Mephistopheles turned to them and with only a moment's hesitation dispatched them as well. He then left the house after setting the entire structure ablaze. The arcangel Gabriel confronted him outside as he was at his final internal struggle over what was going on. Gabriel explained what happened and said that God could take away the Devil's powers if he let him, giving him the chance for salvation. After short deliberation Faustus was fully transformed and gave a sinister smile before attacking and destroying Gabriel. Mephistopheles then returned to Hell. Proclaiming his name as Mephisto, the new Devil, and the new ruler of Hell. In his new persona he became like his old self back when he first made the deal. Like the original Devil making deals with mortals, but always using trickery and underhanded methods to create the most suffering possible. And unknown to most the spirit of Lucifer remained powerless but in existence as Mephisto's secret prisoner in the deepest dungeon of Hell.

Powers and Abilities

Powers

Mephisto possesses vast supernatural power that he inherited from the original Devil known as Lucifer. He is energized by sources of evil in the human world.

Superhuman Strength: Mephisto possesses some degree of superhuman strength. He is capable of using his magical powers to augment his strength, enabling him to lift well in excess of 100 tons.

Superhuman Speed: Mephisto is capable of running and moving at speeds greater than even the finest human athlete.

Superhuman Stamina: The various mystical energies flowing through Mephisto's body augments his musculature so that it generates virtually no fatigue toxins during physical activity. As a result, Mephisto possesses almost limitless superhuman stamina.

Superhuman Durability: The tissues of Mephisto's body, while similar in appearance to a human's, are considerably tougher and more resistant to injury than the tissues of a human being. Mephisto's body is virtually invulnerable to conventional injury. He is capable of withstanding great impact forces, high caliber bullets, exposure to temperature and pressure extremes, and powerful energy blasts without sustaining injury.

Regenerative Healing Factor: Despite his superhuman durability, it is possible to injure Mephisto. However, his unique physiology and mystical energies enable him to rapidly recover from almost any form of injury. He is capable of regenerating almost any damaged or destroyed tissue, even missing limbs.

Immortality: As a demon, Mephisto is functionally immortal. He is immune to the effects of aging and is immune to all known Earthly diseases and infections. Mephisto is also beyond the need of food, water, or oxygen.

Magical Manipulation: He can use this magical energy for various effects, among which are the augmentation of his own physical strength, levitation, teleportation, the projection of mystical energy as force blasts, invisibility, matter manipulation, image projection, size transformation of his body or other objects or beings, the creation of temporary inter-dimensional apertures, and so on.

Ensnare Astral Bodies: Mephisto also possesses certain powers enabling him to capture and detain the astral bodies (sheaths of the soul) of recently deceased human beings.

Mephisto does not have jurisdiction over all the souls of humanity's recently deceased. It is not yet known what the prerequisite conditions are for him to be able to manipulate a human soul, nor are the precise means by which he accomplishes the feat known. Apparently these conditions require that the human being in question willingly agree to submit to Mephisto's will. It is not known how a human being may free himself from bondage to Mephisto (although Johnny Blaze apparently did), nor whether Mephisto will forever retain control of the souls he has obtained. Nor is it known whether or not Mephisto "feeds" on the psychic energies of such souls as other demons do.

Dimensional Entrapment: Apparently Mephisto can entrap a living human being within his realm through sheer physical force, even if the person did not submit his or her will to him. The woman named Topaz was thus entrapped until her recent escape.

Netherworld Dimensional Power Tap: Among the demons of various extradimensional netherworlds adjacent to Earth, Mephisto has few rivals in terms of personal power and scope of influence. Only Thog and Satannish come close. Mephisto's power seems to be connected to his extradimensional domain and diminishes over time spent away from it. Therefore, he usually sends demonic agents to do his bidding.
