History

Gwendolye Stacy was born to the parents of Captain George Stacy, a member of the NYPD, and Helen Stacy. Her uncle was Walter Hardy who had a daughter Felicia. Felicia was the older child and early on she was adopted by the Stacy family when her father, revealed to be the notorious cat burglar known as the Cat, fled the country. Gwen was only a small girl of about 10 at the time, but had been close to her uncle up to that point. Growing up Felicia was bitter about him never coming back, and was defiant to her aunt and uncle. Coming to get into a lot of trouble, and run with a questionable crowd. Things getting to their worst after she wound up being raped by a friend at college. The Stacy's worked hard to try and make sure the same sort of things didn't happen to their daughter. Her father had been partners on the force with Ben Parker. And through them she'd become friends with the latter's nephew they took in named Peter after the death of his parents.

As they started college at Empire State University she and Peter began dating. They signed up to take a biology course with Prof. Miles Warren. One night after she and Peter got into a fight she'd leave a party followed by a fellow classmate who made advances on her. When she refused he tried to have her by force. Miles Warren was leaving the lab for the night when he saw this from the parking lot and intervened. He roughed up, scolded, and threw the student away. He escorted Gwen back to her dorm where he told her roommate about what happened. After their next class Gwen stayed after to thank him and they got into a long talk where they hit it off well. And after that against his better judgment, Miles found himself with a growing attraction to Gwen. However she began dating Peter Parker.

Gwen had felt restricted by her parents and emotionally distant from her father in particular. And deep down began using Warren to fill the void left there. The two bonded, and eventually he'd be offered a job at OsCorp by his former student Norman Osborn for after the end of the current school year. Citing the departure and turn to villainy of Otto Octavius as leaving a position open that he felt he could only give to somebody he trusted. Miles agreed, but resented the idea of leaving Gwen. And so he offered her a job as his lab assistant which she accepted.

During Spider-Man's initial conflict with the Green Goblin he'd discover his identity as Peter Parker and would exploit this knowledge by targeting those he loved. Things would reach a boiling point when he decides to kidnap Gwen to get to him, unaware of their recent break-up over how he seemed unable to fulfill his commitments. One of the first people that Spider-Man would talk to during the search after she goes missing is Miles Warren in his lab. This tip-off would disturb Miles who had been recently discovered that Norman was the Green Goblin, a piece of information he would share with the wall-crawler. He'd decide to try and save Gwen. He injects himself with version of the performance enhancing serum he was working on in this pursuit, knowing of Norman's power.

During the prolonged battle where Spidey would confront the Goblin and a group of his henchmen at a construction site where Gwen was being held, during which time he'd get a severe gash in his leg. Hearing about what was going on Miles and Harry both would arrive on the scene.

After a scuffle with between Miles and Osborn where the former would be left wounded, the latter would fight Spider-Man at the top of the site where Gwen was being held. The Goblin pulled out a razor bat and threatened Gwen with it to taunt Peter. Gwen would try to escape by hitting him in the side but to no avail. He reacts by letting out a chilling cackle and slashing her side with the weapon before throwing her down into the river below.

Miles would see Stacy falling down the side of the building into the river. Frantically, Warren would jump down to find the grievously injured Gwen floating in the river. One of the Goblin's henchmen was going over to her when Miles would arrive. The henchmen blasted him in the chest with his gun. Though he was taken aback, Miles impressed with his newfound strength in the adrenaline rush would attack and ring the neck of the henchman effortlessly. He'd then pick up Gwen and take her back to the lab.

There he tried his best to give her much needed medical attention. However his efforts were of no avail and eventually her heart stopped. Feeling he had no other options left Miles grabbed a syringe filled with the same serum he used on himself and plunged it into her system. This would lead to her springing back into consciousness as the serum's power did it's work in accelerating her body's natural healing factor. She burst in a state of shock and Miles worked to settle her down. He explained what happened and they agreed that she would stay at his apartment for awhile until they understood the full effects the serum would have on their bodies and until she felt safe.

He monitored their health as they tried to figure out what to do going forward. Gwen would reveal that she and Peter had broken up which would set Miles' imagination, though he did continue to hide his feelings for awhile. Eventually however, Gwen would discover this when she found a private letter he used to put down his feelings. He happened across her ash she was doing this and she freaked out. Miles would happen upon her doing this and try to calm her down. When things quiet down he tries to explain everything to her. To which she whilst shaken tries to give him some comforting words. He thinks they have a moment and moves in for a kiss. Gwen proceeded to push him away, slapped him, called him a creep, told him that she is never going to see him again, and began to storm off but Miles then grabbed her by the arm and proceeded to have his way with her.

Gwen was so traumatized by the experience that leaves New York with a plan. She had known that her mother had secretly become in touch with her brother Walter. Gwen was able to access her computer and figure out he was in England.

She made the journey there and presented herself at his door. Whilst confused and concerned Walter was overjoyed to have family with him. They bonded once more and Gwen eventually revealed what happened to her. She asked to be trained how to defend herself and he agreed. For months he helped her hone her abilities. He was surprised by how quick she was able to pick things up. She would eventually manage to break into the vault in his basement where he was keeping his old "Cat" equipment. She would take his gadgets and make a costume for herself. She then leaves a note for her uncle where she talks about how much she loves him and is thankful for what he's done for her, but that she needed to leave to do something personal and important.

Paraphernalia

Equipment:

  • Black Cat's Costume: The costume she currently uses was designed by the Tinkerer, created using leather material, and is designed to increase many of her natural physical attributes far beyond normal human levels by means of micro servers embedded into it. The suit itself is also extremely tight and shows off a lot of her cleavage, which helps to distract her enemies.
  • Peak Human Strength: The Black Cat's costume increases her physical strength to levels beyond the natural limits of a woman of her weight and physical build. In fact, her strength is increased to the maximum of human potential, enabling her to lift approximately 800 lbs with maximum effort.
  • Superhuman Speed: The Black Cat's speed is similarly enhanced, though to levels that are slightly beyond the capabilities of the finest human athlete. Over short distances, she can sprint at a top speed of about 40 miles per hour.
  • Superhuman Agility: The costume she wears also possesses various implants. Without these implants, she has the agility of an Olympic level gymnast. However, the implants augment her natural agility to levels that are beyond the capability and physical limits of the finest human athlete.
  • Retractable Claws: The gloves of the Black Cat's costume contain retractable, metal claws at the tip of each finger. These claws are highly durable and razor sharp. They can also be fired from the gloves in the form of grappling hooks, with which she can scale large buildings with ease.
  • Electromagnetic Goggle Lenses: Gwen wears goggles obtained by the Tinkerer that allows her to see in various ranges of the electromagnetic spectrum, such as infrared and ultraviolet light. When wearing these goggles, Gwen's eyes appear to have green irises as opposed to the blue irises that Gwen naturally possesses.
  • Grappling Hook Tail: The Black Cat has a miniature grappling hook device attached to her belt, designed by the Tinker. It enables her to swing from buildings in a manner similar to Spider Man and Daredevil despite lacking the associated speed of either. She can also use the cable from this device as a tightrope, wall scaling device, swing line, or as a weapon in combat. Her "tail" can also be used to help her keep balanced while climbing walls or rooftops, similar to how a cat uses its tail to balance itself.
  • Cat Ear Transceivers: Tinkerer designed Black Cat's mask so that it contained transceivers in the mask's "cat ears". They allow Black Cat to listen in on any frequency as well as send messages to any other receivers.
