Groot

Early Years

Groot (Taluhnian Name Identification: Groot LXXVII) was a Flora colossi, a hyper-intelligent, tree-like organism of species, originating from the planet Taluhnia, more commonly referred by the intergalactic communities as Planet X, the capital of the branch worlds. For the past hundreds of thousands of years, his race's distant ancestors had peaceful and civilized interactions with several different races whom they had encountered whenever they would frequently visit their floral planet, from the likes of the mighty deity-like figures, the Asgardians to the "proud people" of the Nine Realms, the Vanir.

However, despite their status as one of the most humble and hospitable races throughout their neighboring communities, their species eventually became nothing but a planetary-wide illegal trading post between of the most dangerous influential as well as the infamously richest empires known to the face of the galaxy, such as the Kree Empire, the Shi'ar Empire, Skrull Empire, and several others. Because of this, some independent organizations, who were against the current condition of their planet, tried to ask for help with their former allied community, but failed otherwise, subsequently causing the entire community of Planet X to be fully exploited and "formally" colonized by those races who came trade with their own natural resources.

Exile from Planet X

Groot Attacks 61615

Groot attacking his world's colonizers

A furiously distraught Groot, already in his late adulthood, had felt too sick and tired that his fellow saplings were endlessly being treated with extreme prejudices by their own visitors and colonizers, treating the whole race of Flora colossi with inferiority. After Groot had attacked abusive guards which led to him unintentionally killing an aggressive and impatient Kree merchant, all to defend a group of young sapling workers who were being painfully abused by the latter just because they were doing so "poorly" at their jobs. As an outcome to his defensive actions, the hypocritical supreme council of the race known as the Arbor Masters, which included Groot's stern and hard-headed father, barely recognized that his intent was to defend the children, rather than actually wanting to murder the merchant, and had come to a decisive judgement to exile Groot from their home planet and having him imprisoned in a Kree prison facility for his crime.

Into his late adulthood, Groot found himself as an independent but somehow lonely inhabitant in the Kree prison, where he was promptly captured and imprisoned. While in jail, he finally formed a rapport with Rocket Raccoon, a new prisoner who was recently imprisoned due to his rebellious acts against his morbid torturers, the alien scientists who were also responsible for turning him to the very being he is now. Realizing that the two had coincidentally similar background, to which they would become partners in crime when a massive riot has occurred within the facility, giving them the ultimate chance to escape and start a new life as bounty hunters.

Guardians of the Galaxy

Together as one, the pair had traveled the galaxy picking up bounties for the next few years until they would meet the legendary Star-Lord and the assassin Gamora just before the four of them were captured and put into the prison facility Kyln, where they also met Drax the Destroyer. There, they agreed to work together to escape and sell the Orb for a massive profit. However, when it was discovered that the Orb contained one of the Infinity Stones, the Power Stone, which was being sought out by Ronan the Accuser, Groot courageously convinced his friends to risk everything to stop Ronan's diabolical plans. During the final battle of Xandar, Groot sacrificed his own life to save his new friends. However part of his destroyed body was planted by Rocket to birth a new Groot, informally named Baby Groot, as they officially joined the Guardians of the Galaxy.

The First Regrowth

Baby Groot 002

By default, Baby Groot becomes the youngest Guardian

As Baby Groot, he continues to travel with the Guardians on their adventures, but genuinely acts like a playful and mindless infant during their missions, such as them being hired by the Sovereign as mercenaries in exterminating the parasitic life-form Abilisk, but would still possesses the courageous and heroic personality within him, causing the infant Groot to willingly participate along with the other Guardians in their next main missions since the battle on Xandar, such as their confrontation against the planetary Celestial Ego the Living Planet, Star-Lord's supposed father (in truth, grandfather), followed by their secret investigation on Hala against the Kree black market, forcing them to join forces with the noble Kree Navy Major and future Guardian Mar-Vell in order to successfully defeat the real perpetrator responsible for running the illegal dealings.

Secret Invasion

Later on, Groot, who was now an adolescent at the time, also participated with the Guardians, the Nova Corps, and Mar-Vell in their greatest of efforts on ending the sudden rise of the Kree-Skrull War without having to side with either forces. In the end of the short-lived conflict, the heroes were able to stop the impending warzone on the Skrull capital, Skrullos, thanks to the efforts of their newfound ally from planet Earth, Carol Danvers. However, after immediately learning that the Skrull Empire had their next protocol to unleash the "Secret Invasion" on Earth, leading the Guardians to set their course to the benevolent planet and alert the rest of its heroes about the incoming conflict.

When the stealthy invasion secretly planned by the ruthless Skrull race comes to fruition, the Earth's Ultimates (both the 50-State Initiative of Iron Man and the Anti-Registration Forces of Captain America), S.H.I.E.L.D., the Thunderbolts, the Dark Avengers, and most of the Earth's super-powered individuals must unite to stop the conquering villainous extraterrestrial race, aided by the cosmic heroes, the Guardians themselves and the Yondu Ravager Clan. During the end of the fighting, the Iron Patriot, killed the Skrull Queen Veranke, which ended the war and the attempted invasion, once and for all. In the wake of the averted invasion, the Guardians decided to stay on Earth for a while for "vacation." However, Groot's tour on Earth was proven to be short-lived when he would later tag along with Captain Marvel after attending and honoring Mar-Vell's Kree funeral in his homeworld of Kree-Lar after his sacrifice in the final hour of the invasion.

Threat of Thanos

Infinity Quest

Teen Groot 61615

Teenage Groot joins the fight against Thanos and his forces

In order to start his search for the Infinity Stones, the Mad Titan warlord Thanos and a portion of his starfleet mercilessly attacks Xandar as a part of his ultimate goal, almost decimating half of its population as he retrieves the Power Stone from the Nova Corps. Alerted by this distress signal sent by the Nova Corps, Groot and the Guardians as well as the Yondu Ravager Clan formed an alliance to first attacks of Thanos across the capital city of Xandar, to which they immediately responded by going to planet and helping the Nova Corps combat the massive fleet of Thanos. Despite the hard efforts of the Guardians to stop Thanos and his forces' assault on the planet, Thanos was still the victor, and was already on his way to the next stone, much to the Guardians' dismay and horror. In their desperate attempt to avenge the Xandarian people, the Guardians and the Ravagers decided to being a search operation across the galactic communities in search for Thanos himself and his fleet in order to put an end to whatever he may be planning by then.

Thanos had ultimately triumphed over his enemies once he completed the Infinity Gauntlet, using this to finally complete his goal and destroy half of the life within the universe at the snap of his fingers. When Thanos eventually wiped out half of the universal population after completing the Infinity Gauntlet, most of the Guardians amongst the trillions of victims of his conquest, including Groot who somberly called out to his good friend and partner Rocket as the former withers into dust. This ultimate universal "decimation" has heavily devastated the remaining Guardians for losing a lot of their loved ones due to the heroes' ultimate defeat and failure.

Infinity War

However, the alliance of the surviving heroes, antiheroes, and several redeemed villains battled Thanos, aided by the Cosmic Entities, preventing his second universal goal of shredding all of cosmos to the smallest atom and rebuild it in his own image. In the process of the intense battle, he overlooked his adoptive daughter Nebula who was able to wrest the Infinity Gauntlet from Thanos' hand. Her first act was to undo all that has occurred, which inadvertently freed the heroes and the cosmic entities and resurrected most of those who have once withered away into ash by the Titan's snap of changing reality, including Groot and his fellow fallen Guardians. The battle resumed, and in the end it was Adam Warlock who finally possessed the Gauntlet, ending the cosmic conflict for the Infinity Gauntlet, for now.

Weakened and finally defeated after losing the Infinity Gauntlet against the heroes, Thanos consequently faked his own death after Warlock himself made it look like the Mad Titan has fallen, across the intergalactic community and chose to have himself exiled and secluded at a distant planet far across the galaxy, away from everything that he had accomplished, including his allies, and everyone had been against. For some time, the Guardians have yet to learn of the truth, the painful but also hopeful truth that the Mad Titan has survived his ultimate fate, as Warlock had made it happen on purpose, believing that Thanos could still change his extremist ways and be a better being the universe would eventually appreciate, instead of fearing for so long.

Return to Planet X

Groot and Raccoon

Rocket and Groot's mission leads them to join Contest of the Champions

Following the mutual fragmentation and momentary separation of the Guardians after the events of Infinity War and Crusade which was early 2022, Groot was forced to return to his homeworld of Taluhnia when he heard the devastating news that ever since Thanos snapped away half of his people for a year was brought back later, some of his people were being shipped off to Sakaar to enter among the latest line of contenders in the Elder Grandmaster's Contest of the Champions. In his attempt to rescue his exploited people and confront the Grandmaster, Groot banded with his best mate Rocket Raccoon to a two-man adventure as they encountered familiar adversaries, including their long-time archnemeses Blackjack O'Hare and the Black Bunny Brigade, as well as Rocket's on-again, off-again lover Lylla the Otter who warned the pair not to get involved out of their safety.

Despite knowing how keen and perceptive Lylla was, Rocket ignored her pleas to help Groot and joined the Contest of Champions together to initiate a infiltration and rescue operation in Sakaar. Their overall attempt ended in success, but Groot was baffled and conflicted when his fellow people no longer wanted to return to Taluhnia, fearfully confessing the truth that Groot's own father and the rest of the Arbor Masters were responsible, indicating that the ones Groot and Rocket had saved were not the first time they sold out their own kind for the benefit of the planet and its rulers. Completely disillusioned and remorseful with what his rulers had been doing in his absence, Groot pledged to go back to Taluhnia and confront the Arbor Masters once he helped free a large portion of slaves and gladiators, an incident that caused a massive riot starting from the Sakaar Grand Battle Arena to the Grandmaster's palace which almost brought down the Elder's rule on the planet.

Groot and Rocket flew back to Taluhnia only for their arrival be expected by the Arbor Masters, who came prepared to face their prodigal Groot with an army of hired guns and unleashed the Furnax, a creature which trembled the hearts of almost every Flora colossus for millennia. The Furnax was a destructive, tree-consuming Leviathan which once invaded their home hundreds of thousands of years ago before thousands of its native warriors had to give their lives to take it down, confounding Groot to why his own rulers would weaponize such a world-ending creature to do their bidding. Thankfully enough, the paired Guardians came to get help in the last minute when a group of allies and was led by Lylla, which included those they had saved from Sakaar. The battle ensued for the state of Taluhnia, which ended with Groot confronting his father face to face. The two engaged and languished in a brawl until Groot grew the upper hand. In their final feud, the two were swallowed by the Furnax, giving Groot's father an opportunity to try and sway him into believing his intentions of selling off the fellow Flora colossi had given the Arbor Masters enough to restore Planet X back to its former glory, adding that "taming" the Furnax would serve as Taluhnia's ultimate weapon against their oppressors. Disproving his argument, Groot told his father that Taluhnia was no longer the place that it was due to its past scars of oppression caused by outside forces of tyranny, but it could still be regrown to a brand new paradise, teeming with life.

Groot's father let himself be engulfed in the flaming, acidic stomach of the Furnax and accepted his defeat of out guilt. Although the fatal submission of his father broke his heart, Groot stood true with his words of saving his home in the right way as he grew tremendously in size to break out of the Furnax, ultimately imploding and killing the monster from the inside before it could ravage more of their home. Miraculously enough, Groot was able salvage the remains of his father's sapling to be raised by his fellow people — like how Rocket had saved him before — in the belief that everyone deserves a second, better chance. With Groot's victory, he was granted a place to lead his people. While he was honored that his fellow, Groot believed that someone younger, smarter, more passionate, and who has genuinely invested their time on the planet had to guide Taluhnia into a fruitful future. Eventually trusting a brave and noble Groot who was previously enslaved on Sakaar, Groot and Rocket as they would rejoin the Guardians of the Galaxy in the following year. In the meantime, the pair went with Lylla's crew to venture out into the stars on a brand new adventure.
